After a long, complex, and emotionally taxing ten years, the Taguig Regional Trial Court has finally handed down its historic verdict in the case of “Serious Illegal Detention for Ransom.”
The case was filed by popular actor and host Vhong Navarro against Cedric Lee, Deniece Cornejo, and two of their companions.
The decision: Guilty, which resulted in the sentence of reclusion perpetua, or life imprisonment—a clear and resounding triumph for the justice Navarro had long been seeking.
The celebration across the entire show business industry and among the public was evident, affirming the emotional weight of a case that severely tested the victim’s fortitude.
This verdict is not merely a legal decision; it is a national reminder that the truth, no matter how long and painful the journey, will ultimately prevail.

The Defense’s Final Stand: A Last Ditch Effort
Before their eventual transfer to prison, the camp of Cedric Lee and Deniece Cornejo released a final protest through their statements.
Cedric Lee, who led the defense’s testimony, insisted that the court’s decision was baseless and not in accordance with the law.
According to the defense, the “elements” of the illegal detention case were incomplete. Lee explained that the actual detention of Navarro lasted only “a few minutes” and did not exceed three days, the duration allegedly required for the crime of serious illegal detention.
They also emphasized that the original goal was to take Navarro to the precinct, not to lock him up or demand a ransom.
Furthermore, they vehemently denied the accusation that they inflicted “serious physical injuries” on Navarro, claiming that Vhong’s doctor himself testified that the wounds were not that severe.
The Night of the Encounter: The Contradictory Story
The defense was rooted in Cedric Lee’s detailed account of the night of the incident on January 22, 2014.
According to Lee, they went to Cornejo’s condo with his sister Bernice Lee and friend Zimmer Raz. Upon approaching the door, they heard shouting inside.
When they entered (allegedly because the door was open), they discovered Navarro naked and on top of Cornejo, who was screaming and struggling.
His immediate reaction: He pulled Navarro from behind. Lee claimed that because Navarro punched and resisted, they were forced to subdue him and “hit him” to finally restrain him.
They reportedly obtained duct tape and tied Navarro’s hands and feet to prevent him from resisting or escaping while they called the police.
This is where the most emotional part of Lee’s narrative came in: He claimed Vhong Navarro was pleading with them not to take him to the precinct.
The reason? It might ruin his career, and he allegedly did not know how to explain it to his children.
According to Lee, Navarro even offered a large sum of money—starting from P200,000, escalating to P500,000, P1 Million, and finally P2 Million—as indemnity.
Because of this, Lee questioned, “How can someone who’s so scared be such a good negotiator?” This was their argument used to question Navarro’s victim status.
The Court’s Rejection of the Defense
Despite the statements and legal arguments from the defense, the Taguig RTC stood firm on its decision.
The Court clearly dismissed the “citizen’s arrest” narrative and the challenge to the elements of the case.
Detention is Clear: The Court unequivocally recognized that the “fact of detention is clear.”
Serious Physical Injuries: The Court confirmed that Vhong Navarro sustained “serious physical injuries,” contrary to Lee’s statement.
Lack of Basis for Accusation: Above all, the Court declared that “no evidence was presented that showed Mr. Vhong Navarro committed any crime that would justify his detention.” In other words, their restraint of Navarro had no legal basis.
The Ransom: The accusation of “ransom” does not only refer to money but to any condition imposed before release, which supported the charge of Serious Illegal Detention for Ransom.
In rejecting the defense, the Court emphasized that the assault and detention of Navarro constituted a serious crime with corresponding punishment.
Life Behind Bars: No Privileges for PDLs
Following the verdict, Cedric Lee and Deniece Cornejo were immediately transferred to their respective correctional facilities.
Cedric Lee: Cedric Lee has been transferred to the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. However, he experienced hypertension while in NBI custody, indicating the intense emotional and physical toll the decision took on him.
Deniece Cornejo: Deniece Cornejo formally surrendered and was admitted to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW). According to CIW officials, Cornejo underwent the admission process around 5:40 PM.
Despite Cornejo’s public profile, CIW officials strongly clarified that “there are no privileges given to anyone; all are equal.”
Cornejo was immediately integrated with other Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) under the Reception and Diagnostic Center (RDC) section of the maximum security camp due to the weight of her sentence, which amounts to forty years.
Inside, there are no gangs and no cellphones. Cornejo, along with the other PDLs, follows a strict daily schedule with mandatory hours for prayer, intensive reformation programs, and orientation. For the first five to fifteen days of her admission, only her lawyer is allowed to visit.
The Lesson: The Triumph of Resilience
The case of Vhong Navarro against Cedric Lee and Deniece Cornejo is one of the most memorable in the modern history of justice in the Philippines.
It showcased the incredible resilience of the victim over ten years—a period during which he underwent intense public scrutiny, online bashing, and emotional trauma.
The court’s decision is a confirmation that the saying “you reap what you sow” is true.
This conclusion delivered a powerful message to everyone—that the rule of law remains firm and will not be swayed by celebrity, wealth, or influence.
Vhong Navarro’s search for justice has concluded, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and hope for all victims.
