Traumatized and terrified, Jenica retreated into a shell of silence. She locked herself in her room, refusing to speak about what had happened. Her parents, Antonio and Crisanta, watched in agony as their once-happy daughter transformed into a ghost. She stopped eating, stopped going to school, and would often be heard crying softly in her room at night. The vibrant young girl they knew was fading before their eyes.

One evening, her father gently pressed her for the truth, and the wall she had built around her pain finally crumbled. Through heartbreaking tears, Jenica recounted the entire horrifying story. The next day, June 9, 2017, her parents took her to the police station to file a complaint. They were met with ridicule and dismissal. He sought help from the Public Attorney’s Office and, with the help of a dedicated lawyer, began the arduous process of building a case. But with no physical evidence and no witnesses, the path to justice seemed impossible.

The breakthrough came unexpectedly in November 2017. A guilt-ridden SPO1 Alex Punzalan, the junior officer who had witnessed the crime, appeared at the family’s doorstep. Haunted by his inaction and Jenica’s tragic passing, he confessed everything. He told them he had been too afraid of his senior partner to intervene but could no longer live with the secret. He handed over his sworn statement and, most critically, a secret copy he had made of the patrol car’s dashcam footage from that day.

Punzalan’s courageous testimony was the key that unlocked the case. With a whistleblower from within their own ranks, the Philippine National Police’s Internal Affairs department could no longer ignore the allegations. Salcedo was placed on restrictive custody. Punzalan’s confession also inspired another victim, a young girl from Salcedo’s neighborhood who had been silent for two years, to come forward with her own story.

In April 2019, the trial concluded. Based on the powerful and corroborating testimonies of SPO1 Punzalan and the second victim, as well as the damning dashcam footage, SPO2 Dario Salcedo was found guilty of multiple heinous charges, abuse of authority, and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to reclusion perpetua, or life imprisonment.
