The suicide of well-known social media influencer Eman Atienza deeply saddened Generation Z and her many followers. Her family found the loss of their beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin, and grandchild nearly unbearable.
Behind her active life on Instagram and her cheerful demeanor on TikTok lay a hidden, heavy secret.
You may be shocked to learn that Eman had previously hinted at needing help for her difficult condition, yet many seemed to turn a blind eye.
Some believed her, while many were skeptical. The question remains: was it true?

Early Life and Trauma
Emmanuel Henares Atienza, known as Eman, was born on February 8, 2006. She belonged to Generation Z, a generation that came of age during the rise of social media.
She was the child of prominent figures: TV host Kuya Kim Atienza and businesswoman Felicia Hung Atienza, founder of the Chinese International School in Manila and CEO of The Moscola International School in Pasig.
Eman’s parents were accomplished and highly engaged in their respective careers. Eman was known for often posting various themes on her social media accounts regarding feminism, body and mind positivity, and her personal journey with mental health.
The influencer’s recent return to social media, instead of bringing joy, ended in deep sorrow due to devastating news.
The public was shocked by the statement released by her family on October 24, 2025: “It’s with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of our daughter and sister Eman. She brought so much joy, laughter, and love into our lives. Eman had a way of making people feel seen and heard, and she wasn’t afraid to share her own journey with mental health. Her authenticity helps so many feel less alone.”
Many initially disbelieved the news, but her passing was preceded by several red flags.
From Eman’s childhood, her parents were highly focused on their careers, and she was primarily raised by a nanny.
The child suffered an appalling experience at the hands of her caregiver, enduring not only physical but also emotional abuse. She was beaten, slapped, hit, and threatened.
She was locked in closets and terrorized. When she was only four years old, her nanny exposed her to inappropriate adult movies.
The young child, of course, did not know that what was happening to her was wrong. At such a tender and sensitive age, she suffered intense danger and trauma.
Bullying and Self-Harm
As the child grew, around 2019, Eman was thirteen years old when a student encouraged her to send a private, revealing photo. Wanting desperately to have a close friend, she complied.
However, the private photo, intended only for the friend, was spread throughout their entire group of friends.
This was the beginning of relentless bullying for the young girl, both from male and female students at school. She was ridiculed for years with names she hated.
Nevertheless, she blamed herself for what was happening, engaging in self-blame. Finding no sympathy elsewhere, Eman confessed that she became depressed and started self-harming, cutting her arm.
Overwhelmed by deep sadness, she attempted suicide for the first time. She recounted feeling unsupported, even by her family.
She felt helpless, and suicide seemed like her last resort. But through divine intervention, Eman’s life changed when she started using TikTok.
She expressed her grievances on social media, where many people listened and related to her. This marked the beginning of her online support network. What her family could not provide, she found on social media.
In 2020, she started to recover. She became important to many people, which neutralized her sadness.
She gained motivation to be active and grew her circle of friends. Little did she know that this, too, would eventually be her downfall.
Diagnosis and The Online Backlash
In 2022, Eman was diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder with paranoid and borderline features.
According to the National Library of Medicine, Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is a severe brain disorder. It is caused by multiple traumatic experiences or life-threatening events.
The diagnosis fit Eman’s experience perfectly, as she had been repeatedly abused, threatened, and harmed by her nanny, followed by bullying at school.
CPTSD is accompanied by paranoia, or being easily suspicious that someone intends harm, and borderline features, which is an unstable emotional state. Her mood would fluctuate; sometimes she was cheerful, and other times deeply sad.
The understanding of the woman’s intense sadness was slowly becoming clear until she participated in the “Guess the Bill Challenge.”
The young woman stated that her negative feelings resurfaced when she uploaded her version of the challenge, where they spent over Php13,000 on a meal.
Because of this, many people mocked her. Her social media support turned against her. In 2024, the online haters persisted.
She stated that she was unsure if she wanted to live anymore. On her birthday, she self-harmed again, cutting her arm, leading her to fly to Los Angeles for treatment.
She underwent five-day, weekly, five-hour sessions. Unfortunately, this did not help.
Her support networks completely disappeared. The positive comments were buried by negative ones.
She felt a profound sense of emptiness, worthlessness, and hopelessness.
Final Days and Legacy
On October 16, Eman shared photos of the sky with the caption, “clouds look heavy today.” On Friday, she posted on Instagram with the caption, “There’s a murderer on the last slide, but he’s chill.”
On October 20, she shared a video montage on TikTok with the caption, “Life lately does this. Go hard.” On Tuesday, October 21, reports indicated she still liked some comments.
But by Wednesday morning, she was gone.
On October 22, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Eman’s body was found in her residence in Los Angeles. The cause of death was suicide by ligature hanging.
On Friday, the Atienza family released their official statement. Many Filipinos online were shocked by the suddenness of the event.
However, many were unaware that it was not sudden; many red flags had been ignored. As a result, one of the most active female influencers, a victim of a condition she could not overcome, was lost to social media.
Grief continues to surround her family and social media followers. Eman’s condition might have been managed if her needs had been addressed.
Self-blame turned into self-harm and escalated to suicide because she lacked a proper support network for her feelings. Many people suffer from Complex PTSD but manage to cope because they receive family support, especially from their parents.
However, Eman herself stated that her parents were busy. At a young age, she was surrounded by traumatizing events that were never resolved, carrying the pain into her teenage years.
While social media became a source of support for her, it also seemed to be the reason for her ultimate despair. Everyone must be extremely careful on social media, especially those with existing mental health conditions. On the internet, you do not always know who is your friend and who is your enemy.
A Final Lesson
Eman Atienza’s suicide profoundly saddened many. Her family could hardly accept the loss of the young woman.
Behind her active life on social media, she hid a dark secret. Her serious pleas were largely unheeded. She herself confessed, “she was helpless.”
This serves as a critical reminder to those suffering from Complex PTSD that you need support. Life-threatening risks should never be taken lightly because life is irreplaceable.
Open your mind and allow your understanding to deepen through stories that offer profound lessons. Remember: truth is the key to true freedom.
